Canada’s Walk of Fame (CWOF) recently rolled out its glam red carpet for 2016 inductees with an amazing lineup of Canadian artists, performers and special guests at the Allstream Centre in downtown Toronto. Since 1998, CWOF has been honouring and celebrating more than 150 Canadians who excel in their fields and giving each a permanent star on the walk of fame in Toronto’s entertainment district.
Amongst this year’s inductees were internationally well-known filmmaker Deepa Mehta, the iconic fashion diva, entrepreneur journalist and TV personality Jeannie Becker, singer Corey Hart, actor Jason Priestly, hockey player Darryl Sittler and actor/director Al Waxman.
Deepa Mehta signing her star said that it was a good day for her as her work and contribution to film was being recognized; she was very happy to receive this great honour.
“I am an out and out feminist as everyone may well know and I am happy to see that my work is appreciated,” said the former RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant (2009). “Women should be brought up to be strong and confident and not be afraid to speak up for themselves and against injustice.”
Deepa Mehta’s films have revealed violence against women with strong female roles where women are encouraged to rise above the situation and fight back. However, she felt “not enough is being done to prevent violence against women even in today’s times.”
Her advice to women today: “Don’t be a victim, stand up and speak out and come forth without fear for yourself and other women. Don’t wait for encouragement and support — be bold and step out and the support will follow.”
You can watch the 2016 Canada’s Walk 0f Fame broadcast gala airing nationally, Dec. 18 at 8pm ET/PT on Global.
