Local startup launches scholarship program to support culinary entrepreneurs

A partnership between Toronto’s George Brown College (GBC) and local food delivery marketplace and online platform for food sellers, Cookin, is helping culinary students launch and grow their online food business.

Running until the end of June, seven students from GBC chosen through a competitive application process and mentored by renowned chef John Higgins are showcasing their talent on Cookin. Torontonians will be able to support young entrepreneurs, while trying unique culinary offerings.

“Being part of the storefront on Cookin has enabled me to test the acceptance of Brazilian gastronomy, and understand if there is a demand for that. In fact, gladly there is!” says Flavia Campelo, who has made a significant career transition from engineering to following her true passion for food. The Brazilian who is new to Canada wants to showcase the diversity of cuisines from her home country.

Campelo, who is planning to create a side business as a private chef, says that “being able to understand more about the app, the delivery process, and how to develop a menu for delivery (which is very different from a restaurant)” has been “truly enriching” and will support her future endeavours.

“Leveraging the Cookin app remains a key aspect of my strategy, serving as a platform for clients to sample my culinary [offerings], and potentially engage me for personalized chef services. Essentially, my storefront would act as a showroom with the diverse offerings I can bring to various occasions,” she says.
The partnership has established a scholarship program, and plans to continue executing innovative new programming for students, like mentorship programs, one-time ‘drops’ and more.

“At George Brown, we are always looking for new ways to prepare our graduates with real-world experience, and brand building opportunities,” said Rudi Fischbacher, GBC. “With so many GBC Alumni already finding success on the Cookin Platform, we are excited to see how this cutting-edge new partnership can help our incredible culinary talent thrive and bring the fresh, diverse, creations straight to customers on Cookin.
